On Multitasking

Multitasking refers to doing several [useful & productive] tasks [almost] parallely.
For Heaven’s sake, multitasking never refers to doing one useful task and N useless ones parallely.

Example: cooking rice, sambaar, rasam parallely while chopping vegetables is real multitasking. Whereas, cooking rice while watching TV and reading a novel and chatting over a mobile phone, *is not* multitasking in the true sense.

  1. I just read a fascinating article about how multitasking is a way for the brain to seek novelty. It becomes an addiction and and craving and when it starts to lack, our dopamine levels drop and we crave more, thus our productivity suffers as a result. I wrote about this in my blog and linked to the article. http://thisthatotherthing.wordpress.com/2009/10/28/multitasking-is-the-brain-seeking-novelty/
